About Us

Our Story

The Wissage Bakehouse Limited is a joint business venture by partners Peter Read and Linda Young into the savoury baked products market. After a number of particularly difficult years, in the farming sector, it was clear that farm diversification was the best way forward for us and so we embarked on an ambitious renovation project to convert a range of redundant brick and tile agricultural buildings into a bakery.

Many months of hard work ensued on the building renovation in all weathers, enduring all manner of delays, plus help in the form of grant funding from the Staffordshire Rural Enterprise Programme, with the roof being finished the day before Pete went into hospital for an operation on his wrist.

While all the physical work was being undertaken on the building, we secured the help of Ian at Yes Agency issuing him with a design brief to develop a visual identity for the bakery. We wanted a traditional but fresh-looking logo that reflected our own core values. The result is our striking and distinctive blackbird logo which proudly displays our Wissage Bakehouse brand.

Following this came a host of product development work and trials – with mentoring from Pete at The Wyre Pie Company – our initial focus being to develop a range of speciality pork pies, offering a range of flavours in various sizes, featuring our own hot water crust pastry. Next came a range of delicious hot eating pies and traditional steak pasties.

We launched the The Wissage Bakehouse in July 2018, and achieved our five star food hygiene rating at our premises inspection, selling our range of speciality pork pies and other savoury baked produce to local businesses including pubs, coffee shops, cafes, garden centres and farm shops, as well as direct to the public.

Since then, we have expanded our product offering to include a range of puff pastry products including meaty sausage rolls and tasty pasties.

All products are baked to order so that you can enjoy them at their very best.

Awards

Never content, and always looking at ways to make our products more tasty, the pastry more crunchy and the fillings more delicious, we entered a few of our products at the English Winter Fair in November 2018 and were delighted with our first competition attempts, winning a Gold Award for our Steak & Slater’s Ale pie plus a Silver Award and two Bronze Awards for our artisan pork pies.
